В Hearts of Iron 4 реализм достигает новых высот. Дерево фокусов стран претерпело кардинальные изменения. Стратегия о Второй Мировой Войне открывает перед вами такие нации, как Италия, Эфиопия, Испания, Япония и Китай. Два сценария на выбор: 1936 и 1939 годы. В первом вы погружаетесь в Войну в Эфиопии и Гражданскую Войну в Испании, во втором — наблюдаете за японским вторжением в Китай и событиями Второй Мировой войны.
В ходе сюжетной кампании Hearts of Iron IV геймеры прокачивают бонусы для ключевых стран — Великобритании, Франции, Германии, США, СССР, Японии и Италии. Многие бонусы конфликтуют друг с другом, так что будьте внимательны. Польша и Венгрия участвуют в конфликтах, но управлять ими нельзя. В начале каждой кампании определяйте идеологию — нейтралитет, фашизм, коммунизм или демократию. Она задаст тон вашим действиям и стратегии.
В ходе игры другие страны могут объявить вам войну, и их реакция будет зависеть от выбранной вами идеологии. Стратегическое сражение разворачивается не только на суше, но и в море, и в воздухе. Будьте настороже: новый союзник может стать врагом. Вы можете взять на себя управление любой страной, но помните, что в Италии ваши солдаты будут тонуть в грязи весной, а в СССР вы столкнетесь с метелями, грязью и превосходящими силами противника. Перемирие возможно между многими нациями, однако Германия и Атлантика остаются вне этого. Многопользовательский режим поддерживает до 32 участников на одном сервере.
